Imagine a place where you open your front door to a safe space for your kids to explore and play. Where neighbors want to spend time together and support one another, from gathering for game nights to helping out with childcare. Where just beyond your doorstep, you and your kids can grow vegetables in a shared organic farm, swim in a community pool, enjoy craft rooms and play areas, explore hiking and biking trails, and so much more.

 

That’s the vision the families of Cohousing ABQ are bringing to life. We’re building a neighborhood where kids can enjoy a level of freedom and safety that’s hard to find these days, and where, instead of isolation, parents experience social support, friendship and a sense of belonging and joy.

About Our Neighborhood

Cohousing ABQ is based on Danish cohousing communities, where families have private homes but also share a lot of common space and resources. The design--both physical and social--balances safety, freedom and a sense of support and connection.

The Homes 

 

We’re building 27 privately owned homes, from studios to four-bedroom townhouses. The homes will be built to the Passive House Standard, which prioritizes energy efficiency, comfort and a high quality of construction.

 

Estimated home prices range from about $165,000 to $460,000 and include an investment into the shared common house, outdoor areas and net-zero energy systems.

The Location 

 

Our 3.7-acre site is in Albuquerque’s Vecinos del Bosque neighborhood, on a quiet road with lots of families and kids. The neighborhood’s agricultural roots give it a rural feel, but the center of town is just a 3-minute drive away.

 

The local public elementary school is within walking distance, and a selection of charter and private schools are within a short drive.

The Community 

 

Our community puts people first. Plans include a fully equipped common house for community activities and shared meals, a shared farming area with an orchard and year-round greenhouse, car sharing with electric vehicle options and solar charging stations, onsite renewable electricity generation, a pool, and shared open spaces for picnicking and play.

Family + Values

Since starting Cohousing ABQ in 2017, we’ve worked hard to stay true to our values. These are some of the ways we’re putting family first. 

 

Diverse and inclusive: We embrace diversity and welcome people of all backgrounds, abilities and family makeups. Our community currently includes people aged 2 to 82 and a mix of families with children, multigenerational families, couples and singles. We also represent LGBTQ+ identities and at least 10 different countries of origin. 

 

Sustainable: We’re doing our part to protect the environment and combat climate change, from building houses to the highest sustainability standards to incorporating composting, solar power and community agriculture. And we’re located in a bikeable neighborhood with good transit access, reducing dependence on cars.

 

Good for kids: At Cohousing ABQ, children will not only have safe spaces to explore, they’ll also be valued participants in a multigenerational community that respects even the youngest voices. Here, kids will build relationships with people of all ages, learn crafts and skills from other kids and trusted adults, share in group meals and activities, and enjoy community resources like shared toys and books.

 

Good for parents: From shared meals and chores to impromptu playdates with neighbors, cohousing makes it easier (and more fun!) to be a parent. Cohousing ABQ will provide safe spaces for kids to roam and explore, reducing the need to drive your kids to organized activities. And with other trusted adults as neighbors, everything from childcare help to emotional support will be within reach.
